Wild Nights in Northern Europe's Largest Bog

Store Åmose stretches across the landscape between Jyderup and Sorø in western Zealand — a vast lowland bog unlike anything else in Denmark. Shaped by meltwater from the last ice age, this sprawling mosaic of wet meadows, alder swamps and open waterways feels more like a corner of northern Sweden than the Danish countryside. The shelter site in Naturpark Åmosen puts you right in the middle of it all, with nothing but birdsong and wide-open sky for company.

Ten Thousand Years of Human History

Archaeologists have unearthed some of Scandinavia's most significant Stone Age finds in Store Åmose. Hunting camps, sacrificial sites and tools from the Maglemose and Ertebølle cultures tell a story of human life stretching back over ten millennia. Sitting by the campfire as dusk settles over the bog, you can sense that depth of time. The landscape has barely changed — the same watercourses, the same reed beds, the same enormous sky that the first hunters knew.

Birdlife and Wildlife

The nature park harbours exceptional biodiversity. White-tailed eagles soar above the wetlands, cranes gather on the meadows, and deer and foxes appear at twilight. For birdwatchers, Store Åmose is a paradise — especially during spring and autumn migration, when thousands of birds pass through. The interplay of water, woodland and open terrain creates habitats that have become rare in Denmark's otherwise intensively farmed landscape.

Hiking the Jyderupstien

The shelter sits directly on the Jyderupstien, one of western Zealand's finest hiking trails. The path winds through shifting scenery — dense broadleaf forest, open pastureland and the wide bog flats of Store Åmose. Spending a night in the shelter turns a day hike into a proper multi-day adventure. You wake to birdsong and the scent of damp earth before continuing along the trail through Northern Europe's largest lowland bog.

Experiences in the Area

The area around Naturpark Åmosen offers far more than moorland. The charming town of Jyderup is just a few kilometres away, perfect for a lunch stop or a stroll through its shops. Sæbygård Manor and the historic estates of the region speak of centuries of aristocratic farming. Cyclists will find quiet back roads through fields and villages that show rural Zealand at its very best. Discover more experiences and attractions in the region at destinationsjaelland.dk.
