Store Spjellerup Church

The church was built in four phases. The oldest part is the western section with the tower, dating from the Romanesque period. The chancel to the east was built as a burial chapel for Vemmetofte and only became part of the church interior in more recent times.

The church was restored in 1987/88.

Numerous alterations make the building history of the church quite complex. While the western section and tower are remains of a Romanesque building, the eastern end was not built until the Renaissance.

Originally, the church was very small but was later enlarged with side aisles that have since disappeared. Around 1425–1450, the eastern end was demolished and replaced by a Gothic chancel with its remarkable star vault. After 1500, during the Late Gothic period, the eastern end was once again demolished, and the church was extended with the eastern vaulted bay.

The two side buildings also date from this period: the porch to the south and the storehouse to the north.
