Tersløsegaard – The Ludvig Holberg Museum

The Ludvig Holberg Museum is housed at Tersløsegaard, a beautiful three-winged timber-framed manor house from 1739, located in Tersløse near Dianalund in Sorø Municipality. The estate has roots dating back to 1230, but it was the famous author and Baron Ludvig Holberg who truly put the place on the map when he purchased the property in 1745 and lived here for the last nine years of his life until his death in 1754.

Today, the museum contains three memorial rooms furnished as they appeared during Holberg's time in the 18th century. At the centre of the museum is Holberg's large summer room with access to the garden, and behind two doors in the summer room lie his study and bedroom on either side. The rooms offer a unique insight into the daily life of the great comedy playwright at the manor.

The Holberg Foundation Tersløsegaard was established in 1914 by 19 Sorø academics who had purchased the somewhat dilapidated manor in 1905 with the aim of preserving Holberg's residence in a dignified condition. Today, the estate serves as a museum and cultural gathering place with lectures, concerts, and performances of Holberg's comedies throughout the season.
