Sortebrødre Church in Viborg is a historic medieval monastery church. Here you can admire an impressive altarpiece from Antwerp, historic paintings and traces of the great fire of 1726.
From medieval monastery to church
Sortebrødre Church was originally part of a monastery belonging to the Dominican friars, also known as the Black Friars. During the Reformation in 1529, the monastery buildings were demolished, while the church was preserved.
Much of the church's interior furnishings were destroyed in the great fire of 1726.
Discover the altarpiece from Antwerp
One of the church's highlights is the richly decorated altarpiece from the early 16th century. It was made in Antwerp and originally stood in Copenhagen Castle Chapel before King Frederick IV donated it to the church in Viborg in 1728.
The altarpiece features 89 painted and gilded wooden figures depicting the life, suffering and crucifixion of Jesus.
Historic paintings and church art
Discover the many emblem paintings on the church's pews and wooden wall panels, created by Mogens Christian Thrane after 1734. The paintings combine Bible quotations with symbolic motifs, offering an insight into the religious beliefs of the time.
Explore the historic surroundings
Sortebrødre Church is located in Viborg's old town centre, surrounded by historic streets and narrow lanes. Just beside the church, you will find Mageløs, a narrow lane named after a distinctive green house from the 17th century that once stood here.
