Smørmosen lies on the eastern side of Thurø, about a 15-minute drive from Svendborg. In summer, the area is a popular destination with a bathing beach and minigolf. The beach is sheltered by Smørmose Skoven (woodland) and is easily reached by a paved road with parking close to the water. From here, you can also walk along the coast towards Thurø Østerskov and Thurø Rev.

North of the car park is Smørmose-klinten (coastal cliff), stretching for around 510 metres and reaching up to 12 metres in height. Its layers reveal traces of several glacial periods. The southern section contains glacial deposits from the last Ice Age, while layers in the north may date back to the much older Elster glaciation. Along the beach, you can also find rocks carried here by the ice from Sweden and the Baltic region.

After The South Fyn Archipelago was formed, a narrow strait once crossed Thurø in this area. It was later cut off from the sea and gradually filled with lake and bog deposits, creating the area now known as Smørmosen. Today, Smørmosen is part of Geopark The South Fyn Archipelago, which connects the area’s geology, nature and cultural history.
