A Living Village from the Cooperative Era

At Oplevelsescenter Nyvang on the outskirts of Holbæk, an entire Danish village from the cooperative era has been recreated down to the smallest detail. The open-air museum takes you back to the period between the 1930s and 1950s, when cooperatives formed the backbone of rural Danish society and village life followed its own unhurried rhythm. More than 30 authentic buildings have been moved here, restored, and arranged around a village square where the gravel crunches underfoot and the scent of freshly baked bread drifts from the bakery.

Step Inside Everyday Life

What sets Nyvang apart from other museums is the living atmosphere. Volunteers dressed in period clothing go about their daily tasks in the shops and workshops as though nothing has changed in seventy years. The cooperative store has shelves stocked with goods from the era, the dairy processes milk, and the butcher works behind the counter. You can peek into the pharmacy, visit the small hospital, and step inside the village church. Children are particularly drawn to the smithy, where sparks fly, and the sawmill, where timber is still cut the old-fashioned way.

Nyvang is built for exploration at your own pace. Families can join treasure hunts through the village streets, take a ride on the red vintage bus, or climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage for a tour of the grounds. A New Chapter at Nyvang

The open-air museum continues to grow and evolve. A major new attraction is taking shape as the Seaside Hotel — inspired by the beloved Danish television series Badehotellet — is being built on the grounds. When completed, it will add another dimension to the Nyvang experience and offer visitors a chance to step into the elegant seaside culture of a bygone era.
