Tuse Kirke near Holbæk – medieval fieldstone church with remarkable wall paintings

Just north of Holbæk, where Tuse Byvej winds through the rolling moraine landscape towards the Tuse Næs peninsula, Tuse Kirke rises as a whitewashed landmark above the old village. With roots reaching back to the 13th century, this church houses some of Northwest Zealand's most fascinating lime wall paintings – an artistic treasure that makes it a rewarding destination for anyone interested in Danish cultural heritage.

A church with 800 years of history

The oldest parts of Tuse Kirke – the chancel and nave – were built from fieldstone and tufa during the Romanesque period around the 1200s. The building has undergone numerous changes over the centuries. In the late medieval period, a porch and a distinctive tower were added, with the tower dating to the first decades of the 1500s. A small chapel west of the church was added in the early 1900s.

The vaults in both chancel and nave date from the late medieval period, and it was in connection with the vaulting that the church's famous wall paintings were created. The nave's two bays are estimated to date from the latter half of the 15th century. The church has had a turbulent ownership history – it was sold at public auction in 1802 to Chamberlain Castenskjold at Hagestedgaard and later passed to the Løvenborg barony before becoming self-governing.

The wall paintings – a window into the Middle Ages

It is above all the lime wall paintings that make Tuse Kirke something truly special. The paintings were rediscovered and uncovered in 1890, having been hidden beneath layers of whitewash for centuries. The late Gothic Annunciation paintings tell biblical stories in vivid colours and with a richness of detail that provides a rare insight into the medieval visual world. For children, it can be an exciting treasure hunt to find the various figures and scenes on the vaults.

Today the church stands whitewashed with red roof tiles from 1978, and the original oak roof construction has been preserved in the tower. The one-sided illumination from the south windows, dating from the early 1900s, gives the interior a special atmosphere – light falls dramatically across the old walls and highlights the colours of the wall paintings in ways that shift throughout the day.

Tuse is situated in one of Holbæk Municipality's most beautiful landscapes, where the hilly moraine terrain meets the flat meadowlands down towards the fjord. From the church, it is a short distance to the Tuse Næs peninsula, which stretches into Holbæk Fjord with small villages, fruit orchards, and views across the water to the island of Orø.
