Sleep Under the Open Sky Near Holbæk

Tuseenge Shelterplads sits on the edge of the small village of Tuse, just a few kilometres west of Holbæk on Zealand. The shelter site overlooks the vast meadowlands of Tuseenge, where flat green pastures stretch toward the horizon and wetlands attract a rich variety of birdlife. This is not a conventional campsite — it is a quiet spot where the soundtrack is birdsong, wind through the grass, and not much else.

A Simple Place to Spend the Night

The shelters at Tuseenge are placed on a meadow at the edge of the wetlands, offering wide views across the open landscape. Early mornings here are something special, when mist hangs low over the fields and the first light catches the dew on the grass. The site is free to use and open all year round with no booking required — just turn up with a sleeping bag and enjoy the surroundings. A fire pit provides the option of cooking over an open flame or simply sitting by the fire as the sun goes down.

The Village of Tuse

Tuse itself is a charming village worth a short detour. The medieval Tuse Church contains remarkable lime paintings that rank among the finest on Zealand, and the village has a relaxed rural atmosphere that feels a world away from the bustle of larger towns. Walking paths lead from the village out into the surrounding farmland and along the edges of the meadows, making it easy to combine a shelter stay with a morning or evening stroll.

Holbæk and the Fjord

The town of Holbæk is only about five kilometres to the east and offers everything you might need during your stay — shops, restaurants, and a vibrant harbour area where historic wooden ships are moored alongside modern boats. Holbæk Fjord and its surrounding walking trails make for excellent day trips, and cyclists will find a well-developed network of cycle paths connecting the shelter site with nearby villages and nature areas across northwest Zealand.

Experiences in the Area

Northwest Zealand has plenty to offer nature lovers. Naturpark Åmosen to the southwest is one of Denmark's largest wetland areas, with fascinating flora and fauna. To the east, Tølløse Dyrehave is a deer park where fallow deer roam freely among ancient trees. The coast along Isefjord is just a short drive away and offers swimming spots and coastal walks with views across the water.
