A Medieval Church by the Suså Valley

Between rolling hills and lush meadows south of Sorø, Vester Broby Kirke rises above its village as a piece of living cultural history. Nearly a Thousand Years in Stone and Lime

The oldest parts of Vester Broby Kirke date from the 12th century, when the apse, chancel, and eastern part of the nave were built from rough and split fieldstone along with chalk stone. At that time, Romanesque building style was the norm, and the church's floor plan still clearly bears the marks of that era. During the Gothic period, around the 14th century, the nave was extended with fieldstone and brick, and the distinctive tower with its many crow-stepped gables was added in the late Gothic period together with chapels, sacristy, and porch.

Today the church appears whitewashed, except for the tower and porch, which still stand in bare masonry with visible building materials. The contrast between white plaster and raw stone gives Vester Broby Kirke a very special character, where you can almost read the building history from the outside. The roofs are red tile, except for the apse, which carries a lead roof as in earlier times.

Frescoes and a Crucifix from the 1300s

Inside, the church holds a rich collection of frescoes and furnishings from several centuries. The oldest piece is a crucifix from around 1300, which after a restoration in 1953 still hangs in the church and bears witness to the piety that has characterised this place for more than 700 years. The frescoes span the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and even though not all are equally well preserved, they offer a fascinating glimpse into the visual world that once surrounded ordinary people during worship.

Vester Broby Kirke has historically been closely linked to Sorø Abbey Church, to which it belonged from 1414. Under the absolute monarchy in 1687, the church was transferred to the manor of Næsbyholm, and it was not until 1925 that it became self-governing. That history reflects a West Zealand where church, monastery, and manor were inseparably connected for centuries.

Vester Broby Kirke is a wayside church, which means it keeps its doors open for visitors during daylight hours throughout the year.
