A medieval church with rare artistic treasures

Viskinge Kirke sits atop a hill in the heart of the village of Viskinge, a few kilometres south of Svebølle in Kalundborg Municipality. From this elevated position, the church commands views across the flat West Zealand agricultural landscape, and its white walls and red tile roof are visible from a considerable distance. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, the church has served as the parish gathering point since the Middle Ages.

The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th century, when the nave and chancel were built from rough fieldstone with hewn corner ashlar. In the late Middle Ages, a tower was added to the west and a porch to the south, both in red brick. The tower with its distinctive pyramid roof gives the church a striking silhouette against the sky. Over the centuries, the building has been carefully maintained and stands today as a fine example of a typical Danish village church with layers of architectural history spanning from the Romanesque period to the late medieval era.

Medieval frescoes and modern glass art

Behind the church walls lies a surprising wealth of artistic decoration. The vaults bear lime frescoes from around 1425, attributed to the Union Master workshop. The motifs depict scenes from the New Testament and decorative vine patterns that unfold across the ceiling in muted earth tones. The frescoes were uncovered and restored in the 20th century and offer a rare glimpse into the visual world of the medieval period.

In more recent times, the church received a remarkable artistic addition. Visual artist Grete Balle created a large glass mosaic window that sends coloured light flooding into the church interior, creating a very special atmosphere, particularly when the afternoon sun hits the glass. The interplay between the ancient frescoes and modern glass art makes Viskinge Kirke an extraordinary space where several centuries of artistic tradition converge.

The church interior and its furnishings

The pulpit dates from the Renaissance and is adorned with carved figures and ornaments in dark wood. The granite baptismal font likely dates from the earliest years of the church, bearing witness to the simple, powerful formal language of the Romanesque period. The altar is a more modern addition but fits harmoniously into the overall expression of the space. The church organ and acoustics make it a wonderful venue for concerts and musical events that occasionally take place here.

The churchyard surrounding Viskinge Kirke is a quiet and peaceful place, well-maintained and with many old headstones that tell the story of the parish families through generations. The newer woodland cemetery adjoining the churchyard offers an alternative burial form in natural surroundings beneath tall trees.

Viskinge lies centrally in the West Zealand landscape with easy access from both Kalundborg and Slagelse. The village is surrounded by open fields and small woodlands, and the tranquil rural atmosphere invites a stroll in the area after visiting the church.
