Vitskøl Kloster – living history and experiences by the Limfjord
Vitskøl Kloster is more than just a historical attraction – it is a living destination where the past is still present and where there is something to experience all year round.

Beautifully located by the Limfjord, the monastery unfolds into the landscape with open views, ancient walls, and a sense of calm that invites you to slow down and explore.
Step into history – and feel it
Founded in the 12th century, Vitskøl Kloster holds more than 800 years of history. The historic buildings and the impressive church ruin tell the story of a time when monastic life shaped the landscape and the people around it.
But history is not standing still here.
Through guided tours, the stories come to life – from medieval monastic life to the role of the monastery today. This is not just knowledge, but an experience that brings history within reach.
Monastery gardens – calm, scents and inspiration
The monastery gardens are an experience in their own right – and one of the site’s true highlights.
Here, herbs and medicinal plants are still cultivated, inspired by the monks’ original gardens. As you wander through the gardens, you are met with scents, colours, and historic plants that offer a sensory glimpse into the knowledge of the past.
A place for reflection – where you can slow down and simply be present.
Experiences all year round – big and small
Vitskøl Kloster is full of life – not only during major events, but also in everyday moments.
During the summer season, you can visit the monastery daily, explore the grounds, and experience the unique atmosphere where past and present meet.
Medieval Market
Each autumn, the monastery transforms into a vibrant medieval setting with knights, entertainers, and traditional crafts. Experience history with all your senses – from the clash of swords to the scent of food cooked over open fires.
Christmas Market
As winter approaches, the monastery fills with lights, greenery, and festive charm. The historic rooms provide the perfect setting for a cosy market with crafts, local delicacies, and warm seasonal atmosphere.
Throughout the year, smaller events and activities also take place, offering the chance to experience the monastery at a slower pace – where details and atmosphere truly come into focus.
Nature right outside your door
A visit to the monastery is easily combined with nature experiences.
Just a few minutes away lies the Limfjord with views of Livø, where water and sky merge into calm horizons.
Within walking distance, you will find Vilsted Sø – the largest freshwater lake in Northern Jutland – with a scenic 20 km hiking route through a diverse landscape.
Behind the monastery, forests and trails unfold, and in Uhrehøj Plantage you can enjoy both hiking and cycling.
A living place – still today
What makes Vitskøl Kloster truly special is that it is still in use today. It is run by Træningsskolens Arbejdsmarkedsuddannelser, where young people help maintain the site, care for the surroundings, and welcome visitors.
This adds a sense of authenticity and warmth – making your visit something more than just sightseeing.
Vitskøl Kloster is not just a place you see – it is a place you experience.
Here, history, nature and presence come together in a way that invites you to explore at your own pace.
