Korsør Lystskov — 130 hectares of ancient beech forest between town and coast

Just south of Korsør town centre lies one of West Zealand's best-preserved urban forests. Korsør Lystskov covers 130 hectares of predominantly old beech woodland and has been a favourite destination for locals and visitors for generations. Here, tall canopies arch overhead, quiet paths wind through the undergrowth, and there is a sense of stepping into something that existed long before the town grew up around it.

The forest borders the Great Belt to the west, and several trails lead out to the coastal cliffs with views across the strait. This gives Lystskov a quality that few urban forests can match: the chance to walk from dense forest floor to open sea in a matter of a few hundred metres.

Historic traces among the trees

Korsør Lystskov is not just nature — it is also a living historical landscape. The forest is home to several dolmens and burial mounds from prehistoric times, evidence that people have walked these grounds for thousands of years. The mounds lie scattered along the paths, half-hidden beneath moss and fallen leaves, adding an extra layer of depth and wonder to any walk.

In more recent times, the forest has been a setting for both celebrations and quiet recreation. The old forest pavilion area recalls the days when families from Korsør came here for Sunday outings with packed lunches and good spirits. That tradition lives on today — just in a more relaxed form.

Trails for every pace

The forest has a well-maintained network of paths used by runners, fitness enthusiasts and families on a leisurely stroll alike. The marked routes are easy to follow, and information boards at various points tell the story of both natural and cultural history. The terrain is predominantly flat to gently rolling, making the paths suitable for small children in pushchairs or older walkers who prefer even ground.

For the more active, the forest offers running routes and fitness trails, and there is the option of combining a forest walk with a longer coastal hike southward towards Halskov. Mountain bikers also use the area, particularly in the parts of the forest where the terrain has a bit more character.

Wildlife and plant life

With 130 hectares of predominantly deciduous woodland, Korsør Lystskov is home to a rich variety of wildlife and plant life. Beech trees dominate, but there are also oaks, ash trees and stands of older conifers. The forest floor shifts from anemones and wild garlic in spring to mushrooms and ferns in autumn. Birdlife is varied — woodpeckers, tits and jays can be heard almost year-round, and at dusk you may be lucky enough to spot roe deer at the forest edge.

For families with curious children, the forest is a fine place to explore insects, track animal prints and learn to identify different trees. No special preparation is needed — just good shoes and a little patience.

Location and access

Korsør Lystskov lies immediately south of Korsør town centre in Slagelse Municipality. There are several entrances to the forest, including from the Lystskov car park and from the residential neighbourhoods along its northern edge. The distance from Korsør Station is only a couple of kilometres, making the forest easy to reach by car, bicycle or on foot.

Experiences nearby

Korsør Lystskov is a natural starting point for exploring the wider Korsør area. The historic Korsør Fortress with Tårnborg stronghold is close by, and Korsør Harbour offers maritime atmosphere and charm. To the south, the coastal path continues along the Great Belt, and to the north lies Skælskør with its colourful townhouses and distinctive lagoon.
