Denmark’s Largest Nor

Korsør Nor covers roughly 10 square kilometres, making it the largest nor — a shallow coastal lagoon — in Denmark. The wide, sheltered bay stretches inland behind the town of Korsør and creates a distinctive natural area between the Great Belt and the mainland. The nor is connected to the sea through a narrow channel at Korsør harbour, and the tides gently raise and lower the water in a quiet rhythm that shapes the entire landscape. The water rarely exceeds four metres in depth, and the vast, low-lying expanses of coastal meadows and reedbeds along the shore make Korsør Nor one of the most important staging grounds for migratory birds in West Zealand.

A Bird Paradise at the Great Belt

For birdwatchers, Korsør Nor is one of those places you return to year after year. Along the shoreline, waders, mallards, mute swans, coots and shelducks breed on the coastal meadows, in old clay pits and on undisturbed stretches of beach. Grebes have also settled in the clay pits, and during the migration seasons you can see large flocks of geese, ducks and waders resting on the shallow flats. The nor is especially rewarding in spring and autumn when migration peaks, but even in midsummer there is always life on the water and in the reedbeds.

The Norsti — 16 Kilometres Around the Water

The Norsti follows the shoreline of Korsør Nor on a loop of roughly 16 kilometres. The route changes character along the way — in some places you walk on surfaced paths along the coastal meadows, in others the trail hugs the waterline, and on certain stretches you need to use the road instead. It is precisely this variety that makes the walk interesting: you pass open meadow landscapes with wide views across the nor, walk through small patches of woodland and come past old clay pits that nature has gradually reclaimed. The route can be walked in either direction, and you can also choose shorter sections if you do not want to complete the full circuit.

From Troll Forest to Coastal Meadow

The nature around Korsør Nor is surprisingly varied for such a flat area. To the south lies Korsør Lystskov with its beech trees and walking trails, and near the coast you will find the windswept troll forest where trees grow at odd angles under the constant westerly breeze. The coastal meadow areas along the nor’s edge are characterised by low grass, sea aster and eelgrass, and in spring the meadows bloom in shades of yellow and purple. The old clay pits from the area’s industrial past have developed into small biotopes with distinctive plant and animal communities — an example of how nature slowly reclaims abandoned ground.

Close to Korsør Town

What makes Korsør Nor especially accessible is its location right next to the town. From the railway station it is just a few minutes’ walk to the nor shore, and you can combine a stroll through Korsør’s old quarter with a nature walk along the water. Korsør harbour with its fishing boats and waterfront restaurants is also close by, and Korsør Fortress with the Tårnborg ruins adds historical depth to the area. The Great Belt Bridge rises on the horizon as a reminder that you are at a crossing point between Zealand and Funen.

Experiences in the Area

Korsør and its surroundings offer much more than the nor. Korsair Cablepark provides wakeboarding on a cable system for beginners and experienced riders alike, and along the Great Belt coast there are fine bathing beaches at Kobæk and Rebæk. Trelleborg near Slagelse — one of Denmark’s best-preserved Viking ring fortresses — is a short drive to the east, and the colourful harbour town of Skælskør is easy to reach to the south.
