Omø Beach — Unspoilt Island Life in the Great Belt

In the middle of the Great Belt, between Zealand and Funen, lies Omø — one of Denmark's smallest inhabited islands. There are no large resorts here, no crowded car parks, and no rush. Instead, you will find an island where time seems to move at its own pace and the sea sets the rhythm of each day.

Family-friendly beaches on the north coast

The northern shore of Omø surprises visitors with fine sandy stretches and calm, shallow water. Children can splash about safely in the gentle shallows while parents take in the sweeping views across the Great Belt. The seabed slopes gradually, and on still summer days the water feels almost like a warm lagoon. For families planning a beach day, conditions here are ideal — plenty of space, no crowds, and that particular sense of freedom that only a small island can offer.

The wild south coast

The southern side of the island could hardly be more different. Here you encounter a windswept coastal landscape of stones, low cliffs and untamed nature. The waves of the Great Belt roll in with greater force, and on breezy days you can watch the sea truly at work. For nature lovers drawn to the raw and the rugged, the south coast is a genuine find. Walking along the waterline feels like reaching the edge of the world — accompanied only by the cries of seabirds and the crash of the surf.

Island life by the water

Omø has held on to its own distinct character. The small harbour is the heart of the island, where fishing boats sit alongside sailing vessels and you can watch the fishermen going about their work. The handful of roads invite leisurely strolls past thatched cottages and blooming front gardens. In summer, the air carries the scent of wild roses and sea salt — a combination you only find on the small Danish islands.

Nature and birdlife

The island is a haven for birdwatchers. In the wetlands and along the coast, numerous waders and seabirds can be spotted, including oystercatchers, redshanks and, with a bit of luck, white-tailed eagles circling above the Great Belt. The landscape shifts between open fields, small copses and coastal meadows — a mosaic of habitats that supports a surprisingly rich variety of species. Bring binoculars and you will be well rewarded.

Getting there by ferry

Omø is reached by ferry from Stigsnæs near Skælskør in the municipality of Slagelse. The crossing passes via Agersø and offers wonderful views of the island world of the Great Belt along the way. The ferry journey itself is already part of the experience — as the mainland disappears behind you, that special island feeling sets in. It is worth checking the ferry timetable in advance and planning your trip accordingly.

Experiences in the area

The region around Slagelse and the Great Belt offers far more than beach life alone. Along the coast of West Zealand, historic towns, picturesque harbours and varied nature are waiting to be explored. Whether it is coastal walks, cultural excursions or culinary experiences with fresh local produce — the area has something for every taste.
