The Spring Route is a 5 km trail through the heart of Roskilde, guiding you past all eight historic spring sites. It connects existing springs and monuments and gives insight into both the geological foundations and medieval layout of the city.

Three Routes through the City of Springs
If you would like to explore Roskilde’s natural springs at your own pace, you can choose between three different routes. The short route takes you past Rektorkilden, Maglekilde and Saint Hans Spring, offering a concise introduction to the history of the springs in the heart of the city. It is ideal if you are short on time but still want to experience the distinctive atmosphere surrounding these historic water sources.
The long route guides you past seven of the city’s springs and combines stories of water and wellbeing with visits to Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum and several medieval churches. This route offers a complete narrative of how the springs have shaped Roskilde over the centuries.
The family route is specially designed for children and follows an approximately 7 km walk past seven springs, with small tasks and questions along the way. The route brings history to life and encourages conversation, play and relaxed breaks with views, playgrounds and green spaces.
