Explore Aalborg’s History

Our holdings include everything from photographs, films, and audio recordings to letters, records, and digital archives that document life in Aalborg across generations.

Start Your Visit from Home

You do not have to wait until you arrive to begin your journey into the past. Through the archive’s search portal, Aalborg Stadsarkiv, you can access our collections and explore the people, places, and topics that interest you.

Among other things, you can find:

  • Photographs
  • Films and audio recordings
  • Historical maps
  • Archival materials such as letters, diaries, registers, and association records

You will also encounter what we call archival fonds – collections of written material from individuals, companies, associations, and public institutions. The search portal includes records for all archival fonds held by the archives. If you find a collection you would like to examine, it can be ordered from storage for use in the reading room via the Aalborg City Archives website.

The collection is constantly growing. Already today, you can explore online more than 40,000 photographs, nearly 75,000 archival records, and approximately 3,000 film and audio clips.

Lectures, Events, and Genealogy

Aalborg City Archives is not only a place where history is preserved. It is also a place where history is shared, discussed, and brought to life.

Throughout the year, we host lectures, historical events, and presentations where you can learn more about local history and hear researchers and students talk about their work.

Every Thursday at 1:00 PM, Danske Slægtsforskere Aalborg (The Danish Genealogical Society – Aalborg Branch) hosts a genealogy café at the archives. Both beginners and experienced family historians are welcome to receive guidance and inspiration in tracing their roots. Aalborg
