Agersø Ferry – Gateway to an Authentic Danish Island in the Great Belt

The ferry to Agersø departs from Stigsnæs Ferry Harbour in southwest Zealand and takes you across to one of the Great Belt's most charming small islands in just fifteen minutes. The crossing is short, but the change of pace is unmistakable – from the bustle of the mainland to the unhurried rhythm of island life. The Agersø Ferry is operated by Slagelse Municipality and forms part of the daily connection between Zealand and the islands of Agersø and Omø.

A Short Crossing with a Grand View

The voyage from Stigsnæs to Agersø takes about fifteen minutes, and along the way you pass through the narrow strait between Zealand and Agersø with views of the Great Belt Bridge to the north and the open belt to the west. On calm days, the sky is mirrored in the water, and you can spot fishing boats and leisure sailors crossing the route. It is a crossing that sets the tone for the visit – relaxed, uncomplicated and with a sense of stepping out of everyday life.

Stigsnæs Ferry Harbour

The ferry departs from Stigsnæs Ferry Harbour, located on Stigsnæs Landevej south of Skælskør. There is parking at the harbour for those who wish to leave their car behind and bring a bicycle instead. Many visitors choose to cycle on Agersø, as the island is small enough to cover in a day and the roads are virtually car-free. It is also possible to bring a car on the ferry, but space is limited, so booking ahead can be an advantage.

Agersø – the Island in the Great Belt

Agersø is one of those Danish small islands that still has an active village community with permanent residents, a school and a local shop. The island's landscape is flat and open with sweeping fields, low stone walls and a coastline that alternates between sandy beaches and rocky reefs. The small harbour on Agersø is a charming point of arrival with fishing boats and the distinctive atmosphere that characterises the Danish small islands. From here you can walk or cycle out to the island's various corners and experience the tranquillity that makes the small islands such a special destination.

Nature and Birdlife

Agersø is surrounded by abundant birdlife, and the salt meadows and shallow coastal areas in particular attract waders, terns and geese in large numbers. The island lies on an important migration route, and in spring and autumn you can witness impressive flocks of birds over the Great Belt. For nature enthusiasts, Agersø is an ideal destination, and the short ferry ride makes it easy to combine an island visit with other experiences in southwest Zealand.

Connection to Omø

From Agersø you can continue by ferry to Omø, the slightly more remote neighbour to the south. The two islands share a ferry route and each has its own distinct character – where Agersø is somewhat more accessible and established, Omø is even more secluded and quiet. A day trip to both islands is a popular excursion for families and couples who want to experience genuine Danish island life.

Experiences in the Area

Stigsnæs lies in the southern part of Slagelse Municipality, close to Skælskør with its colourful half-timbered houses and cosy harbour atmosphere. To the north you can visit Trelleborg, the famous Viking ring fortress, and along the coast between Korsør and Skælskør you will find quiet bathing beaches and nature areas.
