Ancient Egypt - Obsessed with life at Moesgaard Museum

Experience the special exhibition Egypt - Obsessed with Life at the Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus. Step into the burial chamber among equipment and canopic jars with the deceased's organs and see how the ancient Egyptians took life with them into death.

While other exhibitions on ancient Egypt mainly focus on death and the tombs of the deceased, Moesgaard Museum brings life into focus, providing insights into Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife and associated rituals.

In the exhibition, you can follow from the moment the deceased takes their last breath, through embalming, and onto the journey as a mummy towards the grave, through the underworld, and back into the radiant sun in an eternal afterlife existence.

The Egyptians' Code to Eternity

The purpose of turning the deceased into mummies was to transform them into the god Osiris, the god of the afterlife. By burying the mummy deep in a shaft grave, the deceased could move from this world to the underworld, avoid annihilation, and exist forever.

At the same time, the mummy served as a divine object, bridging the gap between the living and the dead, the individual and the universe. This required many expensive materials as well as anatomical and ritual knowledge.

You can experience Egypt - Obsessed with Life at the Moesgaard Museum from October 13, 2023, to August 18, 2024.
