A shelter in the quiet heart of the plantation

Bromme Plantage stretches out as a vast, peaceful woodland northwest of Sorø, where dense coniferous forests and winding trails shape a landscape that feels miles away from everyday life. Here, just eight kilometres from Sorø town centre, a shelter site awaits those who seek nature on its own terms — no noise, no pavement, just the sky as the only ceiling overhead.

The shelter sits in a small clearing surrounded by conifers, roughly 150 metres south of Brommecentret. It is a single shelter with room for eight people, and the atmosphere is defined by quiet and forest air. The site is free of charge and requires no advance booking — it is first come, first served, as it should be when nature sets the rules.

Forest paths and hiking trails

Bromme Plantage is owned by the Sorø Academy Foundation and covers a large area of predominantly coniferous forest, criss-crossed by small paths that invite exploration. Two marked hiking routes from "Spor i Landskabet" lead through the plantation — a red route of 12 kilometres and a yellow route of 5 kilometres. Both offer a fine glimpse into the changing character of the forest, from dense spruce thickets to lighter passages where the forest floor opens up.

The fire pit by the shelter is the gathering point when darkness falls. There is something quite special about sitting around the fire in a plantation where the silence is only broken by wind in the treetops and perhaps an owl in the distance. Remember to bring your own firewood or collect fallen branches — and always be mindful of fire risk during dry spells.

The lakes at the edge of the plantation

Close to Bromme Plantage, you will find two of Zealand's most beautiful lakes. Bromme Lillesø, at around 15 hectares, lies nearby and is a quiet gem surrounded by forest and dry grassland. The much larger Maglesø, at over 80 hectares, spreads to the south and is one of the Sorø area's most distinctive lakes, known for its rich birdlife and the old forest edges that frame it. A morning walk from the shelter down to the shore of Maglesø is one of those experiences you remember long after returning home.

Practical information

Dogs are welcome at the shelter site but must be kept on a lead. The site is free and available without booking — simply turn up and settle in. The municipality of Sorø offers an impressive concentration of nature and cultural experiences within a short distance. The town of Sorø with its historic academy, medieval abbey church and the beautiful Lake Sorø lies just eight kilometres southeast of the plantation. To the west, roads lead to Tersløse and the rolling moraine landscape around Åmosen, one of Denmark's most important archaeological wetlands. To the north, the landscape opens towards Bromme Lillesø and the expansive fields that have shaped the area since the Middle Ages.

For hikers and cyclists, the area is a paradise — beyond the plantation's own routes, you can connect to regional trail networks leading onwards to Kongskilde Friluftsgård and the nature areas along the River Suså.
