Designmuseum Danmark

Step inside the design memory of Denmark. Here you will encounter the proud Danish design tradition in the museum’s extensive collection of Danish and international design icons, as well as groundbreaking exhibitions on the design of the future. The museum offers a string of exhibitions, ranging from the Victorian homes and collection manias of the past to contemporary designers and trends, dealing with the global issues of tomorrow.

The museum also houses Copenhagen’s greenest museum garden, a superb café, and a design shop with the classics as well as new and unique design finds. Earlier, the museum was the first public hospital in Denmark, The Royal Frederik's Hospital, where the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was admitted and died in 1855.

Danish modern

One of the museum’s highlights is the permanent exhibition Danish Modern. Danish design is world-renowned, but what led to its success? And who were the major Danish designers of the 20th century? Danish Modern tells the story of Danish design from the 1920s to the year 2000, focusing on the creation of some of the most iconic Danish design objects.

A green oasis in the city

Visitors are also invited to take a break in the museum garden – a quiet, green oasis hidden away from the noise of the city. The garden is used for exhibitions and events, and the museum café offers outdoor seating where guests can enjoy lunch, iced coffee, or cake. The garden is open to the public during museum opening hours.

The museum café, FORMAT, is a popular spot where you can enjoy lunch, coffee, or cake in a historic and authentic setting. The café focuses on simple dishes prepared with seasonal local ingredients and inspired by classic culinary traditions. From the café, there is direct access to the museum garden.
