Gavnø Convent Church
Gavnø Abbey Church was originally built as the church of a Dominican convent and is now part of Gavnø Castle. Inside, you will find a colourful church interior with Baroque woodcarvings.
Gavnø Klosterkirke was truly built on the strength of faith in 1402, when Queen Margrethe I commissioned the construction of one of only two Dominican convents in Denmark. Gavnø Castle Chapel is the original church of the convent. Gavnø Castle was later built around the original convent church.
Admiral Niels Trolle and his wife embellished the colourful church interior with, among other things, a headless troll and several Baroque wood carvings, which are well worth studying in their own right.
A visit to Gavnø Castle Chapel can be combined with a visit to Gavnø Castle and the beautiful Gavnø Castle Park. The castle park also features a rose garden, sensory garden, rose maze and a nature playground with a pirate theme for children, who can also take part in a fun treasure hunt. At the castle, you can enjoy Scandinavia’s largest private collection of paintings, comprising 1,000 works. The island of Gavnø is also home to Denmark’s only castle brewery.
Dogs are welcome on leads in the castle park, but are not permitted inside the castle. You are welcome to enjoy your own food in the castle park or in the new picnic area. Handcarts can be hired in the park. An accessible toilet is available at the entrance, and ramps for wheelchair users are available at Café Tulipanen and Gavnø Klosterkirke.
