Hammelev Church

Far out in the Kattegat, the elevated Hammelev Church on Djursland is visible and probably served as a seamark in the past.

Hammelev Church is built of chalk stone and dates back to the early Middle Ages (1100-1250). Hammelev Church is one of the best-preserved chalk stone churches in the area.

The pulpit is in simple Renaissance style with Corinthian columns and portal panels. The Romanesque granite altarpiece with double rope moulding is one of the finest in Horder.

The decorations on the nave of the church have been interpreted as having Anglo-Norman features. A ship is carved into one of the columns in the chancel. It probably dates from the 1500s or 1600s.

Open by appointment with the gravedigger or at the vicarage.
