Starting point for the hiking route

By car or bicycle

In principle, you can start the route wherever you like. For convenience, however, we recommend starting in the village of Ertebølle.

At Ertebølle Strand Camping you’ll find free parking, a café, toilets, and a kiosk (as well as mini golf and more).

If parking is unavailable there, you can alternatively drive 500 metres down the road to the public parking area at Ertebølle Hoved. Here you’ll also find free parking, toilets, and a small exhibition building (if this parking area is full, there is usually space at the Stone Age Centre Ertebølle, located across the road).

By public transport

If you’re travelling by public transport, it can be an advantage to start “in the middle” of the route – at Myrhøj Camping.

There is a bus stop at Myrhøj Camping. The stop is called “Myrhøj Camping (Løgstørvej/Vesthimmerlands Kommune)” and is served by bus lines 112 and 522 operated by NT (Nordjyllands Trafikselskab).

  • Lines 112 and 522 stop directly at the campsite.
  • Use rejseplanen.dk or the NT app to find the exact route from your starting point.
  • Check whether your bus requires advance booking – especially Telebus services (typically line 522).
  • The arrival stop is located directly at Løgstørvej 69, the address of Myrhøj Camping.
  • Important: Check the timetable and whether booking is required.

Good to know about marking, type, and length

The red hiking route around Ertebølle is a wonderful 10 km circular walk. It is marked in one direction only, and the paths are clear with mown grass where applicable.

Please note: One of the markers inside the forest (around the 8 km mark) has come loose and is pointing in the wrong direction.

Good to know about terrain, difficulty, and accessibility

The route is a mix of gravel roads, mown grass paths, and asphalt. For approximately 500 metres, you’ll walk on a cycle path starting from Myrhøj Camping (Løgstørvej 69, 9640 Farsø).

Please note …

At the start of the route, just after Ertebølle Hoved (where you should walk up and enjoy the view over the Limfjord and the distinctive cliffs), the red arrows lead you into a fenced area. Here, there may be tall grass and grazing cattle during parts of the year.

You can easily skip this section of the route – simply follow the road from the parking area back to the asphalt.

If you choose to follow the route across the grassy field, you’ll end up down by the fjord and the black fishermen’s houses. Even if you bypass the grassy field, you can still reach the fjord and the fishermen’s houses – in that case, it’s just an out-and-back walk along the same gravel road.

What you can experience on the hiking route at Ertebølle

  • Stone Age Centre Ertebølle: After about 1 km, you’ll pass the Ertebølle Stone Age Centre, which is worth a visit. The centre has a small shop, coffee, and toilets.
  • Ertebølle Hoved: Right opposite the Stone Age Centre is Ertebølle Hoved – with views over the Limfjord and the impressive cliffs. You can take a detour to the bathing jetty (removed in winter) and see the fossils in the cliffs.
  • View of the Limfjord: After about 6.5 km, you’ll be higher in the landscape again, with views over the fields toward the Limfjord.
  • Myrhøj Stone Row: After about 8 km, you reach Myrhøj and the very special 156-metre-long stone row. The place feels a little magical – if you ask us. The area around Myrhøj is also a unique archaeological site, representing the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age through a mix of houses, graves, and religious cult sites.
