The island is car-free and has no grocery store or facilities for purchasing everyday necessities. Some visitors may find Hjortø very simple, with few amenities beyond the toilet building at the harbour. However, this simplicity is part of the island’s unique character. Visitors can explore the work of local artists and craftspeople, who create ceramics, jewellery and even hand-painted birdhouses. These small workshops offer a glimpse into the island’s creative community and the opportunity to take home a unique souvenir.

The landscape consists of coastal meadows, low shorelines and open terrain where the sea is never far away. Over centuries, wind, waves and currents have shaped the coastline, creating marine forelands, spits and small coastal lakes. These dynamic landscapes contribute to the island’s distinctive character.

Hjortø is particularly known for its rich wildlife. More than 100 bird species have been recorded on the island, making it an attractive destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The island is also home to the rare European fire-bellied toad, which survives in the archipelago’s ponds and wetlands. Several uncommon plant species can also be found here.

The western tip of Hjortø is a protected bird reserve and an important habitat for breeding and migrating birds. Visitors can explore the island on foot, enjoy the coastal scenery and experience a landscape where nature remains largely untouched. Overnight stays in shelters or tents make it possible to enjoy the island’s calm atmosphere and unique natural surroundings for longer.
