For centuries, there has been a conflict between the miller at Nyborg Castle Mill and the farmers of Hjulby over the water. The miller needed the water to power the millstones to grind the grain into flour, and the farmers needed the water for their fields for grazing and haymaking. Compromises were reached and locks were built so that both parties could benefit from the life-sustaining water. Thus, the first known lock structure dates from around the year 1200, and the current Kullerup canal lock is from 1951. Today, the area with its fields, bogs, and small forests is part of the municipality's recreational areas, and a path across the Juelsberg estate's land also provides access to the area around Hjulby Lake.

Please be aware that there are free-ranging cattle in the area.
