Isbådsmuseet – Ice Boat Museum in Korsør
On Halsskov Odde in Korsør, the Danish Ice Boat Museum tells the story of the brave crews who for centuries transported travellers across a frozen Great Belt. Free admission, fully accessible and run by volunteers – a unique experience by the water in Slagelse Municipality.

At the tip of Halsskov Odde by the Great Belt in Slagelse Municipality, where railway ferries once docked, you will find the Danish Ice Boat Museum – a unique testament to a remarkable chapter in Danish transport history. The museum tells the story of the specially built ice boats that for centuries maintained the crossing of the Great Belt during cold winters, when ice covered the narrow strait.
Since 1794, the ice boat crossing was a necessary and vital service connecting Zealand and Funen during the months when the sea froze over. The sturdy ice boats and the experienced crews who manoeuvred them through the pack ice represented an extraordinary combination of knowledge, courage and solidarity. Even in the harshest weather conditions the crossing continued, and travellers risked their lives to reach the other shore.
The Ice Boat Museum gives visitors the opportunity to step into this dramatic past. Through photographs, texts and authentic objects, one witnesses the conditions under which the crews and travellers operated. The exhibition illuminates both the technical aspects of the ice boats themselves and the human stories connected to the crossing – stories of hard work, community and dependence on the forces of nature.
The museum is housed in a historic building complex on Halsskov Odde and is run by volunteers. Admission is free during opening hours, and accessibility is a priority – the museum has level entry and is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility and wheelchair users.
Halsskov Odde is in itself a beautiful and historically charged place. The headland extends into the Great Belt and offers sweeping views across the sea, fresh coastal air and a landscape that recalls the forces that for decades set the conditions for the ice boat crews' work. The site is an ideal starting point for a walk along the waterfront.
