Views from Oldenbjerg at Halsskov Overdrev

Oldenbjerg rises 21 metres above the flat landscape near Korsør and offers a view that reaches far beyond what one might expect from such a modest height. From the top of the hill, the landscape opens in every direction — to the west you see the Great Belt and Sprogø, to the north the town of Korsør with its harbour, and to the east and south the rolling moraine landscape unfolds with fields, hedgerows and scattered farmsteads. It is one of those places where the character of southwestern Zealand comes sharply into focus.

The hill sits on Halsskov Overdrev, an ancient grassland area with a habitat type that has become rare in Denmark. The overdrev is characterised by dry, nutrient-poor soil with wild grasses, herbs and scattered scrub — a landscape shaped by centuries of grazing. In summer, the grassland blooms with wild orchids, thyme and other drought-tolerant plants, attracting butterflies and insects that depend on precisely this habitat.

A landscape shaped by the Ice Age

Oldenbjerg is part of the moraine landscape left behind by the last Ice Age on western Zealand. The hill consists of material deposited by glaciers some 15,000 years ago, and its rounded form is typical of the moraine deposits found in the area. From the summit, you can clearly read the landscape's history — the soft hills, flat hollows and scattered small lakes all speak of the ice's work. It is geology you can see with the naked eye, without needing a textbook.

Halsskov Overdrev also has a military dimension. The area served as a training ground for many years, and it is partly this use that has preserved the open character of the grassland. Today it is managed as a nature area, and the public has free access to walk the terrain and enjoy the view from Oldenbjerg.
