Korsør By og Overfartsmuseum (Korsør Town and Ferry Museum) is a fascinating cultural history museum dedicated to the story of Korsør and the legendary ferry crossing over the Great Belt. The museum is housed in the historic "Store Magasin" at Søbatteriet – part of Korsør's old fortress complex – providing a wonderful historic setting for its many exhibitions and collections.
Founded in 1981, the museum has been sharing the region's rich cultural heritage with visitors from near and far. Through artefacts, photographs, scale models and historic documents, visitors are transported back in time to an era when Korsør was one of Denmark's most important transport hubs – the gateway to Funen and the rest of the country.
One of the museum's central themes is the legendary Great Belt ferry and the centuries-long history of the crossing. For hundreds of years, the ferry service across the Great Belt was an indispensable link for travellers, merchants and royalty alike. The museum holds a unique collection of objects, models and stories from this important chapter in Danish transport history – including artefacts from the great state ferries that connected the country's regions for generations, before the Great Belt Bridge opened in 1998.
Beyond the ferry history, the museum explores Korsør's local town history. Visitors can follow how the town evolved from a small fishing village into a bustling harbour town with trade, crafts and industry. Collections of old tools, everyday objects and photographs paint a vivid picture of life in Korsør across the centuries.
The museum also features a section dedicated to notable figures who shaped Korsør's history, as well as rotating temporary exhibitions highlighting current or seasonal themes.
Korsør By og Overfartsmuseum is a wonderful destination for families, school groups and anyone with an interest in local history, seafaring and Danish cultural heritage. The charming exhibition rooms and the historic setting by the harbour and fortress make for an unforgettable visit for all ages.
The museum is centrally located in Korsør, close to the harbour and other attractions in the town. Korsør is a charming town in West Zealand with a rich maritime tradition, beautiful nature and easy access by motorway and rail.
