Four clover trails through Høng’s forest and history

The Clover Trails in Høng are four colour-coded walking routes that all start from Høng town centre and lead out into the rolling landscape around this small railway town in Kalundborg Municipality. Høng sits where the railway lines from Slagelse and Kalundborg meet, and the town has always been a crossroads for travellers in West Zealand. But it is the nature and history in the hinterland that make the place worth stopping for.

Høng Skov – ancient deciduous forest

One route leads into Høng Skov, a mix of old beech and oak covering the hills south of town. The forest is threaded with winding paths that rise and fall with the terrain, and on quiet mornings you can hear woodpeckers working in the oldest trunks. In spring the forest floor turns white with anemones, and in late summer blackberries ripen along the path edges. The forest is large enough to feel far from everything, yet small enough that you never truly lose your way.

Finderup Church – medieval drama

Another route passes Finderup Church, set in the open landscape east of Høng. The church is a Romanesque fieldstone building from the 12th century, and the site is inseparably linked to one of the most dramatic chapters in Danish history – the murder of King Erik Klipping in Finderup Barn in 1286. The barn is long gone, but the church still stands with its thick walls and peaceful churchyard, offering long views across the flat farmland to the west.

Løve Mølle – hilltop views

The third route leads to Løve Mølle, set on one of the highest hills in the area. The mill itself is gone, but the foundation and the wide view remain. From here, on clear days you can see far across the rolling landscape that characterises this part of West Zealand – terrain shaped by the Ice Age, with long ridges, deep valleys and scattered farms. The climb demands a little extra effort, but the reward is a sense of having the entire district to yourself.

Along the stream and through town

The fourth route stays closer to Høng and follows the waterways on the edge of town. Here you walk on flat paths along the meadows, where lapwings and oystercatchers nest in spring, and where old willow trees bend over the stream. The route is easy and accessible to all, giving a good insight into the everyday landscape surrounding a West Zealand railway town. Along the way you also pass Høng station with its characteristic building from the early railway years.

Practical information

All four routes are marked with clover symbols in different colours and range from short town walks to longer hikes into the countryside. None is particularly demanding, though the terrain around Høng Skov and Løve Mølle is hillier than you might expect from Zealand. There are benches and rest areas along the way, and in Høng town you will find cafés and a supermarket close to the starting point.
