Wild camping at Kongskilde in Sorø Municipality

East of Hundesøen lake near the former Kongskilde Outdoor Centre lies one of Central Zealand's most untouched wild camping areas. The 1-2-3 rule applies here: you may pitch your tent for one night, in a group of no more than two tents, and you must be at least 300 metres from the nearest dwelling. This is primitive outdoor life in its purest form — no facilities, no booking, just you and nature.

The landscape around Kongskilde

The area sits on the edge of the Danish Nature Agency's land at Kongskilde, where the Suså river winds through a varied landscape of forest, meadow and bog. The terrain rolls gently between forest clearings and denser stands of beech and oak, and in spring the forest floor is bathed in white wood anemones. Hundesøen lake, located just west of the camping area, is a quiet forest lake surrounded by reeds and tall trees — perfect for an early morning walk or an evening of birdwatching.

Wild camping at Kongskilde appeals to those seeking solitude who willingly trade comfort for authenticity. The area primarily attracts hikers on the Sjællandsleden trail and cyclists following local routes through the Sorø forests. From the camping area you can walk along the Suså river southward to the Tystrup-Bavelse Lakes or northward toward Sorø town — both routes offering magnificent nature along the way. Remember to bring all equipment and drinking water, as there are no facilities on site.

How to get there

The camping area lies east of Hundesøen lake at Kongskilde, approximately 8 kilometres southwest of Sorø town. The nearest parking is at Kongskilde Outdoor Centre on Skælskørvej 34, 4180 Sorø. From there it is a short walk into the forest.
