Camp Among Grazing Animals at Kongskilde

On the shore of the small Hundesøen lake, tucked inside the fenced grounds of Kongskilde Friluftsgård near Sorø, lies a tent site unlike any other. Here you pitch your tent among peacefully grazing cattle and horses — a nature experience you rarely get this close to. The four tent spots operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and staying overnight is completely free.

A Lake All to Yourself — With Free Fishing

Hundesøen is one of those quiet lakes in the central Zealand landscape where you can sit for hours watching waterbirds glide across the surface. The bonus: fishing here is free — just bring your rod and enjoy the stillness. Picnic tables and a fire pit sit right by the water, perfect for cooking dinner under open skies as the sun drops behind the rolling hills west of Sorø.

Kongskilde — Where Nature Meets Medieval History

Kongskilde Friluftsgård is far more than a trailhead. The grounds around the old monastery ruins tell stories reaching back to the Middle Ages, and the area sits at a crossroads of several long-distance trails including the Skælskør Path and the Sorø Nature Trail. In every direction, paths lead through beech forests and open meadows. The tent site at Hundesøen sits sheltered within the fenced enclosure, creating a unique atmosphere somewhere between wilderness and safety.

Practical Information for Your Stay

The tent site at Hundesøen accommodates four tents and works without booking — simply arrive and set up. On site you will find a fire pit and picnic tables. Bring your own drinking water, firewood and everything you need — this is a primitive site in the best sense. Parking is available at Kongskilde Friluftsgård, Skælskørvej 34 near Sorø. Note that the site is inside a fenced area with grazing animals — keep your distance from the livestock and please do not bring dogs into the enclosure.

Experiences Around Hundesøen

From Kongskilde you can reach some of West Zealand's finest nature areas. The Tystrup-Bavelse Lakes are just a few kilometres away, offering canoeing, hiking and birdwatching. Sorø itself — the old academy town — draws visitors with Sorø Lake, the Abbey Museum and cosy cafés around the medieval church. Cyclists will enjoy the scenic route along Skælskørvej all the way to the coast at Korsør. For even more inspiration on excursions and activities in the region, visit destinationsjaelland.dk.
