Shelter by Møllebækken — deep in the Kongskilde countryside

Just east of Kongskilde Friluftsgård, where the Møllebækken stream winds through rolling hills down towards the Suså river, you will find a shelter site that feels a world away from everything — even though Sorø is only a few kilometres distant. Two solid shelters with room for 12 people in total make this an ideal spot for an overnight stay with the family or a group of friends looking to experience some of Central Zealand's most untouched nature up close.

The nature around Møllebækken

The landscape at Kongskilde is shaped by river valleys, deciduous forest and the quiet water of the stream that gave the site its name. From here it is a short walk to the Suså, which connects the entire river valley from the Tystrup-Bavelse lakes in the south to Næstved in the north. In spring the forest floor is carpeted with white wood anemones, and in autumn the beech trees turn copper and gold. This is one of those places on Zealand where you can still hear the silence — broken only by birdsong and the murmur of running water.

Facilities and practical information

The shelter site has a fire pit, picnic benches and access to drinking water, so you can keep things simple and cosy. The two shelters are solid and well-maintained, managed by Naturstyrelsen Storstrøm. The site must be booked in advance through the Danish Nature Agency's booking page — ensuring that the shelter is yours alone when you arrive. Parking is available at Kongskilde Friluftsgård on Skælskørvej 34.

A great base for exploring the river valley

From the shelter site you can walk straight into one of Zealand's most connected natural areas. The Suså Trail follows the river through a landscape that changes character kilometre by kilometre — from open meadows to dense woodland. Kongskilde Friluftsgård is worth a visit in its own right, with its history as a former monastery and machine factory. If you fancy getting on the water, canoeing on the Suså is an option, and cyclists can quickly reach Sorø with its Academy Gardens and lakes.

The Kongskilde area is a hub for outdoor activities in Central Zealand. The Tystrup-Bavelse lakes lie just a few kilometres to the south and offer some of Zealand's best fishing spots and swimming opportunities.
