Kongstrup shelter site sits on the south-facing slopes of the Røsnæs peninsula with an unobstructed view across the Great Belt — the kind of location that makes you stay an extra night. From the shelters you can watch ships passing through the strait and on clear days see the coastline of Funen on the horizon. The site has four shelters and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early pays off.

Røsnæs is Zealand's westernmost peninsula, and Kongstrup sits right in its most dramatic stretch. The terrain shifts between open fields, wind-sculpted scrub and the steep coastal slopes that define the peninsula's southern side. Quiet gravel roads connect the shelter site with surrounding villages, and the area is excellent for shorter walks through a landscape that feels far more remote than its distance from Kalundborg would suggest. Roe deer are regularly spotted in the morning and evening hours.

The Nature Centre and Kongstrup Cliffs

Close to the shelter site you will find Naturrummet on Røsnæs, an interpretation centre that tells the story of the peninsula's unique geology and nature. The Kongstrup cliffs rise dramatically from the coastline, revealing layers of chalk and flint deposited over millions of years. The cliffs attract geology enthusiasts, but even without specialist knowledge, the sight of the white escarpments against the blue strait is striking. In spring, rare orchids bloom on the slopes.

Røsnæs — Many Faces of the Peninsula

From Kongstrup you can explore the entire Røsnæs peninsula on foot or by bike. Heading west, the peninsula narrows and the vegetation shifts from farmland to rare steppe-like grassland found almost nowhere else in Denmark. At the very tip stands Røsnæs Lighthouse, and the view from there across the Great Belt and Kalundborg Fjord ranks among the most impressive in eastern Denmark. Walking and cycling routes through the area are well marked and vary from one-hour loops to full-day adventures.

The town of Kalundborg is a short drive east, offering medieval atmosphere with the five-towered Vor Frue Kirke and a revitalised harbour.
