A Hat Hill with Wide Views over the Great Belt

Højbjerg rises 29 metres above sea level on the western part of the Halsskov peninsula, just south of Korsør. The hill is a so-called hat hill — a geological formation created during the Ice Age, where meltwater deposits shaped a distinctive, cone-shaped elevation in the otherwise flat coastal landscape. From the top, a wide panorama opens over the Great Belt, and on clear days you can see all the way to Funen and Langeland to the west and the island of Sprogø in the middle of the strait.

Halsskov Overdrev — Rare Nature Close to Town

Højbjerg sits in the heart of Halsskov Overdrev, one of the most remarkable nature areas in Slagelse Municipality. The overdrev is one of the few remaining places on Zealand where you can still experience the original grassland nature with open, grazed slopes and an unusually rich flora. In spring, wild orchids, cowslips and scabious bloom among the gnarled hawthorn bushes, and the area attracts a rich insect life with butterflies and wild bees. The landscape bears the marks of centuries of grazing, and the chalky soil provides habitat for plant species rarely found elsewhere in the region.

Trails and Walking Routes from Højbjerg

From Højbjerg you can follow the winding paths down across the overdrev towards the coast, where the Great Belt shoreline stretches out with stony beaches and views of the shipping traffic in the strait. To the south, the trails continue along the coastal slopes, passing several other hilltops with their own viewpoints. The area is part of a larger trail network connecting Halsskov with the town of Korsør and the historic fortress at Korsør Harbour. A circular walk from Højbjerg down to the coast takes around an hour at a relaxed pace.

Korsør and the Great Belt Coast

Korsør is one of West Zealand's oldest and most characterful harbour towns. The town has a rich history as a crossing point to Funen, and the medieval Korsør Fortress lies just a few kilometres from Højbjerg. The harbour area offers cafés, fishing and a maritime atmosphere that tells of the town's close connection to the sea. The Great Belt Bridge, rising to the northwest, is a constant companion in the landscape — a modern landmark that contrasts beautifully with the untouched overdrev at Højbjerg.
