Village History: Lindelse Station

Lindelse station: A stop on the road between Rudkøbing and Bagenkop.

When Langelandsbanen railway opened in 1911, the travel time from Lindelse to Rudkøbing was reduced to just 30 minutes. The station, like the other stations on the railway, was built in red brick (today whitewashed) with a wooden warehouse. Passenger traffic at Lindelse Station was good, with over 12,000 annual travellers. The station became nationally recognised as the station in Denmark that had the youngest manager, Edith Hansen, aged just 19. In 1955, Billedbladet published a report on the many clerks at Langelandsbanen, where Edith was of course also mentioned. The station closed in 1962 and was taken over by painter Knud Frederiksen.
