A Baroque Gem on the Asnæs Peninsula

Lerchenborg Castle sits on the Asnæs peninsula, just a few kilometres south of Kalundborg town in Kalundborg Municipality. The castle is one of Denmark's most complete baroque estates and an architectural experience that leaves most visitors speechless. From its majestic linden avenues to richly decorated rococo interiors, the buildings tell the story of an ambitious general who set out to create his own little Versailles in West Zealand.

General Lerche's Dream in Stone and Lime

The story begins in 1742, when General Christian Lerche acquired the modest Østrupgård farm and decided to transform it into something far grander. Over the course of a decade, from 1743 to 1753, he built a complete manor estate where the farm buildings, stables, main building and garden were bound together along a continuous axis of symmetry. Lerche was deeply engaged in the architecture himself. As a military officer, he had travelled across Europe and seen the great baroque palaces of Italy, France and Germany. Among his Danish officer colleagues he found inspiration from the leading architects of the era — Thurah, Eigtved and Häusser were all military officers like himself.

Baroque Architecture in Rare Completeness

What makes Lerchenborg truly special is its consistent baroque symmetry, binding the entire complex together. The main axis runs from the park in the east, through the garden and the centrally placed garden hall of the main building, continuing through the cour d'honneur, the stable yard and out to the farm courtyard to the west. Three parallel linden avenues guide the eye towards the castle, and the famous linden bower — known as "The Green Lerchenborg" — frames the parterre garden with arched hedgerows, windows, archways and pavilions in clipped linden. This is landscape architecture of world-class calibre, created by French landscape architect Jean-Baptiste de Longueville, who came to Lerchenborg in 1747 and together with the general laid out the garden much as it appears today.

Rococo Behind Baroque Facades

While the castle's exterior is pure baroque, the interior rooms harbour one of Denmark's finest rococo interiors. In the main wing, parlours and halls are arranged en filade along the garden side — that is, in a row along the outer walls so that one can see from one end of the building to the other through the tall windows. The Knights' Hall in the south wing is a particular highlight, with white stucco reliefs on walls and vaulted ceiling, and grisaille paintings depicting scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Colours vary from room to room in shades of green, white, grey, red and gold, and the patterned parquet floors have been preserved since the original construction.

Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy-Tale Castle

Lerchenborg also has a literary connection. Hans Christian Andersen visited the castle in 1862 and experienced the magnificent halls, whose fairy-tale decorations must have appealed to his imagination. Today, the ninth generation of the Lerche family still lives at the castle, and the buildings are listed as a unique testament to Danish baroque architecture and 18th-century manor life.
