A Medieval Monks' Canal in the Heart of Sorø

Along the Filosofgangen in Sorø runs a 1,800-metre canal that bears witness to the engineering skills of the Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages. Møllediget was constructed by the monks of Sorø Abbey to channel water from Lake Sorø to power the monastery's mill — an impressive feat of water engineering that can still be traced through the landscape today.

The Monks' Waterway Through Town

The canal extends from Lake Sorø eastward, following the terrain in a gentle curve along the southern part of Sorø Academy. The monks of the powerful Cistercian monastery dug the canal sometime in the 12th and 13th centuries to harness water power for grain milling and other purposes. The waterway served as a lifeline for the monastery and was essential for its self-sufficiency.

Today, large sections of Møllediget remain visible as a distinct ditch in the landscape. In several places you can see the original earthen banks along the canal sides, and the path of the water through the terrain is clearly discernible in the flat landscape surrounding Sorø.

Filosofgangen — A Historic Promenade

Møllediget follows the route of the famous Filosofgangen (the Philosophers' Walk), which in itself is one of Sorø's most atmospheric walking routes. The path takes its name from the many thinkers and poets who have walked here over the centuries — including B.S. Ingemann, who lived at Sorø Academy and used the path for his daily stroll. Walking along Møllediget is therefore not just a stroll beside an ancient monument, but a journey through Danish literary and cultural history.

The path is flat and easily accessible, leading through a beautiful woodland of tall beech trees with views over Lake Sorø. Especially in spring when the beeches come into leaf and in autumn when the foliage turns golden, the walk along the Filosofgangen is a treat for all the senses.
