On a hilltop northwest of Sorø lie the remains of Pedersborg — a medieval castle mound and church ruin that together tell the story of power, faith and conflict in the West Zealand landscape. A Fortress from the Late Viking Age

The Pedersborg castle mound is believed to date from the late Viking Age or the early Middle Ages. The mound rises prominently in the terrain, and you can still make out the earthen ramparts and ditches that once protected the fortification. From here, the castle's inhabitants had a formidable overview of the surrounding landscape — a strategic position that made the site a natural centre of power in the area.

According to tradition, it was from here that the Hvide clan ruled over the region before Sorø Abbey took over the dominant role. The name Pedersborg is linked to Peder Thorstensen, a local nobleman from the 12th century whose family played a central role in Sorø's early history.

The Church Ruin in the Churchyard

North of the present Pedersborg Church — which is itself a beautiful Romanesque village church from the 12th century — the remains of an older church ruin can be seen. The ruin testifies that an even older church once stood on the site, possibly directly connected to the castle complex. The foundations are still visible in the churchyard grass, and the rough fieldstones speak of the robust building techniques of the Middle Ages.
