Musholmleden – coastal hike from Reersø to Korsør

Musholmleden is a 58-kilometre regional hiking trail that follows the coastline of West Zealand from the distinctive Reersø peninsula to Korsør Station. The route traces a wide arc along the Great Belt, giving walkers a panorama of open sea, sheltered bays and a hinterland of fields and small villages. It is a trek that alternates between wild coast and quiet farmland, rewarding the patient hiker with some of Zealand’s most undisturbed coastal spots.

Reersø – a peninsula with distinctive character

Musholmleden begins on Reersø, a narrow peninsula jutting into the Great Belt west of Gørlev. The peninsula is one of West Zealand’s most unspoilt places, with longhouses, half-timbered cottages and a small harbour that feels as though time has stood still. The landscape is flat and open, and from the shore you can see across to Musholm Island and beyond to Samsø. On calm mornings the sea lies like a mirror, broken only by birdsong.

Along the coast heading south

From Reersø the route leads south along the coast, where the landscape shifts between sandy beach, low cliffs and salt meadows. Along the way you pass Dalby Strand and Kelstrup Strand, where at times you walk directly along the waterline with waves close at hand. This is where Musholmleden sets itself apart from many other hiking trails – it dares to take the walker right out onto the shoreline rather than keeping safely to inland roads. The terrain is mostly flat, but occasional hills offer views across both sea and fields.

Through Kalundborg and Slagelse municipalities

Musholmleden crosses the border between Kalundborg and Slagelse municipalities and passes small villages, farms and patches of woodland that break up the open coastal landscape. The route mostly follows minor roads and field tracks, and on certain stretches it overlaps with cycle routes and smaller country roads. Along the way you find rest areas with benches and tables, and at several points there is access to drinking water and toilets. Information boards about local attractions and natural conditions make the walk both educational and entertaining.

Bildsø Skov and natural gems along the way

One of the highlights of the walk is the stretch near Bildsø Skov, a lush deciduous forest that offers welcome shelter on windy days. The wood is rich in birdlife, and in spring the forest floor is carpeted with anemones and wild garlic. From here it is only 17 kilometres to Korsør, and the terrain begins to change character again as you approach the Halsskov area with its open meadows and views of the Great Belt Bridge. The final kilometres pass Halsskov Overdrev, an open nature reserve with rare plant and animal species.

Korsør – the maritime destination

Musholmleden ends at Korsør Station, in the heart of a harbour town with centuries of ferry history. From the station it is a short walk to Korsør Fortress, Tårnborg Ruin and the lively harbour promenade. For families with children there are playgrounds and beach areas nearby, and for those wishing to continue walking, Musholmleden connects with both Lagunestien and Sjællandsleden.

Musholmleden covers a total of 58 kilometres and can be walked as one continuous journey over several days or split into shorter stages. The route is signposted and follows a mix of gravel roads, field tracks and short stretches of tarmac. It is predominantly flat and suits both experienced hikers and families taking their time. The starting point on Reersø is best reached by car, while Korsør Station offers return transport by train.
