A tiny island with big nature

Nekselø sits in the middle of Sejerø Bay, roughly 20 minutes by ferry from Havnsø, north of Kalundborg. The island is home to only around 25 permanent residents, and that seclusion is precisely what makes it special. The Nekselø Nature Trail stretches 6.7 kilometres across the island and has been certified as a quality trail by the Danish Ramblers Association. The route splits into two marked loops: the southern circuit follows green arrows through open grazing land and along the coastline, while the northern circuit is marked with brown arrows and leads through hilly terrain with sweeping panoramic views across Sejerø Bay. Each loop takes roughly one and a half hours at a comfortable pace.

The path is unsurfaced and undulating in places. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and pushchairs are not suited to the terrain. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead throughout the walk.

Rare nature in a small space

Despite its modest size, Nekselø harbours a remarkable diversity of wildlife. The island is one of the few remaining habitats for the rare European fire-bellied toad, whose distinctive call can be heard in the wetland areas during warmer months. The flora includes plant species that have long since disappeared from the mainland, among them rare orchids and coastal plants that thrive on the island's chalky soils.

Birdwatchers will find plenty to observe as well. The cliffs and shoreline provide nesting sites for numerous seabirds, and during migration season, flocks of wading birds stop over on their journeys along the Danish coast.

Practical tips for your visit

Nekselø has no tourist infrastructure in the conventional sense. There are no shops or restaurants on the island, so bringing a packed lunch and plenty of water is essential. A toilet and drinking water tap are available at the harbour pier.

The ferry to Nekselø departs from Havnsø, a small fishing harbour about 20 minutes north of Kalundborg. The crossing takes around 20 minutes and offers lovely views across Sejerø Bay. Sailing times vary by season, so checking the schedule in advance is a good idea.
