Skælskør transforms into Denmark's pumpkin capital

Every year during week 42, something truly special happens in Skælskør's historic town centre. The streets fill with orange decorations, the aroma of spiced pumpkin dishes drifts through the narrow lanes, and thousands of visitors flock to what has grown into Denmark's largest and most ambitious pumpkin festival. Since its launch in 2021, the festival has established itself as one of the most popular autumn events in West Zealand, with the programme expanding each year to include new activities and surprises.

Everything unfolds around Det Røde Pakhus and the harbour square, which during festival week is transformed into a colourful Pumpkin Land. Here you can experience everything from giant display pumpkins to creative installations, and the atmosphere is a blend of harvest market, art exhibition and family celebration. Skælskør's characteristic half-timbered houses and narrow streets provide the perfect backdrop for the festival, and the town has embraced the event in a way that makes it a genuine local celebration of autumn.

Creativity, food and community

The Pumpkin Festival is about far more than just pumpkins. The programme spans widely with workshops in ceramics, baking and decoration, and there are activities for all age groups. Children can decorate pumpkin cakes and make sweets in candy workshops, while adults can enjoy pumpkin café latte at local cafés or join pumpkin Friday bars with entertainment. The festival also features communal dining with local ingredients, where the pumpkin naturally plays the starring role on the menus.

The more competitive can try their hand at pumpkin bowling, and for those who prefer to see the town from a horse-drawn carriage, festive carriage rides run through Skælskør's streets all week. These are the kinds of experiences that make the festival more than an event — it's a whole week of immersion in autumn's most beautiful fruit.

Thorsbjergaard and world-class pumpkin growing

The Pumpkin Festival in Skælskør has a very special connection to Thorsbjergaard, Denmark's largest pumpkin producer, located just a few kilometres outside town. Many of the festival's impressive display pumpkins come from here, and the collaboration between the farm and the festival gives the event an authenticity that few food festivals can match. Thorsbjergaard grows hundreds of different pumpkin varieties, and during the festival you can experience the diversity up close.

The entire concept behind the festival is carried by Skælskør Erhvervsforening and a large network of volunteers who together create a week where the whole town buzzes with life and activity. It is this kind of local engagement that makes West Zealand a special place to visit.

Experiences in the area around Skælskør

Skælskør and its surroundings offer plenty of experiences beyond the pumpkin festival. The historic market town with its colourful houses along the fjord is worth a visit in itself, and a network of walking and cycling trails leads into the undulating moraine landscape around the town. Skælskør Lystskov and Skælskør Nor are within walking distance of the town centre and offer beautiful nature along the water. To the south, Agersø and Omø stretch into the Great Belt with their own island atmosphere and opportunity for ferry trips.

For those wanting to explore more of West Zealand's coastline, Stigsnæs and Borreby Mose are within short driving distance and offer peaceful natural areas with rich birdlife. Slagelse Municipality also boasts a wealth of cultural-historical attractions, from Trelleborg Viking Fortress to Korsør's fortifications.
