Lagunestien – a coastal hike along West Zealand’s southern shore

From Korsør Harbour to the small fishing village of Bisserup, Lagunestien traces one of the most varied coastal landscapes in West Zealand. The trail follows the Great Belt coast southward, passing lagoons, salt meadows and small bays that have formed behind spits and headlands over thousands of years. It is a walk that constantly changes character – from the maritime bustle of the harbour town to wild, open stretches where the horizon is broken only by migrating birds.

Korsør and the maritime starting point

Lagunestien begins at Korsør Station Square, from where the marked route quickly leads south. For centuries Korsør served as the crossing point between Zealand and Funen, and the town still bears the marks of its seafaring past with fortifications, old warehouses and a lively harbour. Before heading south it is worth strolling along the harbour promenade and breathing in the salt air of the Great Belt.

Salt meadows and lagoons

South of Korsør the landscape opens into broad salt meadows where seawater and freshwater meet in shallow lagoons. The area is one of Zealand’s most important resting grounds for wading birds and migrants, and with a pair of binoculars you can spot avocets, dunlins and oystercatchers along the water’s edge. The terrain is flat and open, and on clear days the view stretches all the way to Langeland and the South Funen archipelago. It is on these stretches that Lagunestien truly shows its strength – a feeling of being alone with nature, even though civilisation is never far away.

Through the hinterland of Slagelse Municipality

The route passes through small villages and past farms that have stood here for generations. Quiet field tracks are lined with old willow hedgerows and small streams running toward the coast. Slagelse Municipality has laid short boardwalks and paths on the softer sections, so the walk is comfortable even in damp weather. Along the way you also cross stretches that form part of the larger Sjællandsleden trail, making it possible to combine Lagunestien with longer hikes in the region.

Bisserup – a quiet destination by the sea

Lagunestien ends in Bisserup, a small coastal community with a charming harbour and calm stretches of sandy beach. Here you can sit on the bench by the jetty and watch the fishing boats rock gently as the sun sets over the Belt islands. Bisserup has a relaxed atmosphere that feels like a step back in time – no noise, no rush, just sea and sky. For families with children there is space to play on the beach and collect shells, while adults enjoy the peaceful seaside setting.

Practical information

Lagunestien is approximately 47 kilometres long and runs through four municipalities, but the core section in Slagelse Municipality covers between 25 and 30 kilometres. The route is predominantly flat and suits both experienced hikers who walk the full distance in a day and families who prefer to split the journey over several days. The paths are a mix of gravel tracks, field roads and short stretches of tarmac. The starting point at Korsør Station makes it easy to reach by public transport.

The entire West Zealand south coast holds experiences well beyond the walk itself. At Korsør you can visit Korsør Fortress and Tårnborg Ruin, and to the east lies Skælskør with its colourful houses and cosy harbour atmosphere.
