Five metres from the sea, at Zealand's westernmost point

Right out at the tip of Røsnæs, built into the slope below Røsnæs Lighthouse, lies a shelter just five metres from the sea. It is a smaller, open shelter with room for three or four people staying the night, if you lie close together.

Its position and construction make it fairly exposed to wind and weather, but it sits high enough that there is little risk of flooding. It is very much a summer shelter and works best when the wind is not from the west.

Practical information

There are no facilities at the shelter itself. You may, however, make a fire among the stones on the shore in front of it, and there are two toilets where you can also fetch water – by the lighthouse and on the car park. Both may be closed at times. You are also welcome to use the fire pit by the lighthouse, which has a table, benches and a grill grate.

If you come by car, park on the car park 500 metres from the lighthouse and follow the gravel road. At the lighthouse, a staircase on the left leads down to the beach and on to the shelter at the foot of the steep cliff.

The shelter cannot be booked in advance – it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

What you will experience

In return, the sea, the sky and spectacular nature are right at your doorstep. You can enjoy the panoramic view across the water, and on clear days the view reaches Samsø, Funen and Jutland. With luck you may spot harbour porpoises, seals and fish playing at the surface, while a wealth of birds passes through during the day and evening.
