Man-made lake in a disused quarry with a rich fauna and flora and good fishing opportunities.
Stenbrudssøen is a beautiful man-made lake just north of Nexø. Until 1957, the area was a sandstone quarry started in 1754 by King Frederik V. The quarry provided reddish sandstone for many important buildings in Nexø, but also many other places in the country – including the Statue of Liberty in Copenhagen.
Just north of the quarry lake, you can see the fault between the Svaneke granite and the Nexø sandstone. The boundary between granite and sandstone is clear as a copper channel up to 1.5 meters thick, which is, however, partially obscured by pebbles that are thrown up on the coast during storms.
Stenbrudssøen has a rich bird, fish and wildlife, including mink, rainbow trout, perch, eels, nightingales, yellow sparrows and eiders.
Stenbrudssøen is up to 18 meters deep in places and is a popular put-and-take lake for anglers. A fishing license is required to fish in the lake.
