Agersø – a small island with big nature experiences

Agersø sits in the middle of the Great Belt strait, just a short ferry ride from Stigsnæs near Skælskør. The island is small – barely five kilometres long and two kilometres wide – yet it holds a surprising variety of landscapes. From open farmland with stone walls and grain fields to dramatic coastal stretches overlooking the belt, Agersø has a distinctive atmosphere that feels more like the South Funen archipelago than the West Zealand mainland.

A network of marked trails leads across the island, providing access to virtually every corner of Agersø. The routes vary in length, so you can choose a short walk along the harbour or a full-day circuit covering the entire coastline. The paths are well maintained and easy to follow, and along the way the landscape shifts from fields to meadows to beach within just a few hundred metres.

Coastal landscape and birdlife

The southern tip of Agersø is one of the best places in West Zealand to experience coastal birds at close range. The salt meadows attract waders in large numbers, and from the trail along the south coast you can often spot avocets, lapwings and redshanks during the breeding season. The island’s location in the middle of the Great Belt also makes it an excellent site for observing migrating birds in spring and autumn, when flocks of geese and ducks pass overhead.

The northern part of the island offers a different kind of coast with small pebbly beaches and seaweed-covered shores. Here the sounds of the sea and the scent of salt dominate, and on calm days you can see all the way to Funen and Langeland from the highest points along the coastal path.

The village and the island’s history

Agersø village clusters around the harbour and the church, which dates back to the Middle Ages. The street layout has been preserved with low half-timbered houses and orchards behind the hedges. A walk through the village is like a glimpse into Danish rural history, and the atmosphere is shaped by the quiet island life where neighbours know each other and time moves a little slower than on the mainland.

The island has lived off fishing and farming for centuries, and the traces are visible everywhere – in the old fishing sheds by the harbour, in the stone walls dividing the fields, and in the open landscape where cattle graze down to the water’s edge. This maritime heritage gives the island an authenticity that is hard to find elsewhere in the region.

Practical information about the trails

The trails on Agersø require no special fitness level and are suitable for most age groups. The terrain is flat, and the surface alternates between gravel paths, farm tracks and shorter stretches along the beach. Dogs are welcome on the trails but must be kept on a lead during the breeding season to protect the birdlife on the salt meadows.

The ferry to Agersø departs from Stigsnæs and takes about ten minutes. The crossing itself is an experience, and the short voyage across the narrow sound gives a sense of the isolation that has shaped the island’s culture and nature. From the ferry landing, the trails begin almost immediately, so you can walk straight off the ferry and into the landscape.
