Cycling route from Skælskør to Stigsnæs – 16 km along the coast
Between the charming harbour town of Skælskør and the open landscape at Stigsnæs lies a signposted cycling route of 16 kilometres, offering one of West Zealand's most varied coastal experiences. The route starts at Skælskør Harbour, where boats bob in the narrow strait, and leads the cyclist southwards through terrain that alternates between flat fields, gentle hills, and open views across the Great Belt.
Landscape and nature along the route
Shortly after leaving Skælskør town, the landscape changes character. The familiar streets give way to country lanes where hedges and fruit trees line the road, and one can glimpse the fjord beyond the fields. The terrain is varied with a maximum gradient that challenges just enough without taking the wind out of the ride. Along the way, you pass small villages and scattered farms that bear witness to the area's long agricultural history. Further south, the landscape opens up, and the breeze from the Great Belt provides refreshing coolness even on warm summer days.
Skælskør – a proper harbour town
Skælskør is an ideal starting point, whether you set off early or take a coffee first. The town has a charming harbour atmosphere with fishing boats, kayaks, and colourful little houses along the strait. The pedestrian streets wind between half-timbered buildings, and there are several places to fill up your water bottle or buy provisions before jumping in the saddle. Skælskør Lystskov, just north of town, is worth a short detour for those with extra time.
Stigsnæs and the peninsula views
At the southern end of the route, you reach the Stigsnæs peninsula, where the horizon expands considerably. From here, there are views towards Agersø, Omø, and on clear days all the way to Langeland. The area around Stigsnæs has a raw, windswept beauty that differs markedly from the more sheltered coast at Skælskør. The old country road along the coast gives a feeling of being far from everyday hustle, even though you are only a fifteen-minute drive from the motorway.
Practical information about the ride
The route is signposted and runs mainly along quiet country roads and cycle paths with varied surfaces. There are public toilets at the starting point in Skælskør, along the way at approximately the 7-kilometre mark, and again near the end point. The GPX file can be downloaded so you can easily follow the route on your bike computer or phone. The ride suits fitness cyclists and experienced everyday riders but requires some stamina due to the rolling hills. With children in the saddle, it is a good idea to take breaks along the way and enjoy the views rather than pushing the pace.
Experiences in the area
The area around Skælskør and Stigsnæs offers far more than the cycling route itself. Borreby Mose and Skælskør Nor are both fine nature areas that can be explored on foot or by bike. The old manor house Borreby lies just a few kilometres from the route and is a historic landmark in the landscape. For those interested in culture, the Skælskør Town Museum is worth a visit, and the harbour area has cafés and eateries serving locally inspired dishes. Korsør with its fortress history and the Great Belt Bridge as its landmark is just 20 minutes away by car.
