Vasebro Shelter Site (Kobæk Skov)

Sleep where the fjord meets the forest

Vasebro sits where Skælskør Fjord flows into Agersø Sund — one of those spots on the West Zealand coast where the landscape changes character within a few hundred metres. Forest, salt meadow, and open water lie side by side, and from the shelter site you can watch the light shift across the fjord while gulls and wading birds move along the shore. The site belongs to the Vasebro Nature School in Kobæk Skov and is part of Slagelse Municipality's outdoor offerings.

Coastal nature at Kobæk

Kobæk Skov stretches along the coast with a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, and paths lead down to the beach and along the fjord shore. To the south the land opens into salt meadows that flood at high tide and attract abundant birdlife — lapwings, dunlins, and ducks forage in the tidal zone. A restored wetland nearby has made the area one of the better birding locations in the municipality. That is also why dogs are not permitted on the site.

The fjord and the sea

Skælskør Fjord is a sheltered waterway between Zealand and the islands of Agersø and Omø. The fjord has a temperament of its own — calm and mirror-smooth on a still summer evening, but with force in the waves when the wind picks up from the west. Anglers know the waters for sea trout and flatfish, and kayakers use the fjord as a starting point for trips to the small islands. From the shelter site it is possible simply to sit and gaze out over the water — that in itself is an experience.

A different pace

Vasebro has a different feel from the inland shelter sites. Here it is the sea that sets the rhythm. The sounds are different — lapping waves, bird calls, wind in the reeds. In the evening you can watch the sun set over the fjord from the fire pit, and on clear nights the stargazing is impressive because light pollution is minimal along this stretch of coast. It is a place that invites you to linger a little longer.

Things to do nearby

Skælskør is about 5 km from the site and is one of West Zealand's most charming small towns, with a medieval town centre, harbour atmosphere, and local eateries. Korsør to the north offers the Great Belt Bridge and the old fortress. Along the coast there are good swimming beaches at Kobæk Strand, and cyclists can follow routes connecting the coastal towns. Practical information

The shelter site is booked through the Slagelse Municipality website. It is accessible year-round and easiest to reach by car or bicycle from Skælskør. Please note that dogs are not permitted, to protect the birdlife.
