Vestermarie Church
Vestermarie Church is a neo-Romanesque church located in the small village of Vestermarie on Bornholm. It combines medieval heritage with later artistic additions. A visit offers insight into both history and culture.


Location and history
Vestermarie Church is located about 8 km east of Rønne in the village of Vestermarie. It serves as an important historical landmark in the area.
Neo-Romanesque architecture
The current church was built in 1885 in neo-Romanesque style using granite, replacing an earlier medieval church dedicated to Mary.
Interior and artwork
The pulpit and altarpiece originate from the former church and depict Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. A ceramic cross from 1982 represents “Life, death, resurrection and eternity”.
Rune stones and chapel
In the churchyard, you can find six rune stones from the 11th century. The site also includes the town’s oldest building, a chapel dating from 1825.
