Skjoldungestierne
Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings along the Skjoldungestierne – a scenic and culturally rich hiking route close to Copenhagen. Here you’ll encounter everything from fjords and forests to ancient burial mounds and manor landscapes, all set within the Skjoldungernes Land National Park.
The Skjoldungestierne stretch for 40–50 km and connect the towns of Roskilde, Lejre and Hvalsø. You’ll walk winding footpaths through open countryside, past lakes and streams, and alongside historical landmarks. It’s a journey where nature and history go hand in hand.
Highlights along the way
Along the route, you’ll come across coastal meadows, woodlands, marshes and fields – and possibly traces of people from times long past. You’ll pass watermills, stone fences and burial mounds as you make your way through the peaceful landscape.
Practical information
The route is easily accessible by public transport. It runs between the railway towns of Roskilde, Lejre and Hvalsø and can also be joined from Gevninge and Osted. All paths converge in Gl. Lejre, considered the historical heart of the national park. The trail is not suitable for bicycles, wheelchairs or prams, and some sections can be challenging depending on the season.
