Ubby and Jerslev – walking between woods and antiquity

Between the quiet villages of Ubby and Jerslev in the northern part of Kalundborg Municipality lies a landscape that holds far more than it immediately reveals. Here, lush deciduous forest meets open fields and traces of people who have lived in the area for millennia. The Clover Trails start from Ubby and offer four colour-coded routes, each bringing the walker close to nature's changing faces and the deep history of the landscape.

Four routes with distinct character

Like all Clover Trails, the routes start from a shared point in Ubby and spread into the landscape like the leaves of a four-leaf clover. The shorter routes stay close to the village and give a quick introduction to the surrounding nature, while the longer routes lead deeper into the forests and past ancient monuments that bear witness to Bronze Age and Iron Age inhabitants. The surface alternates between woodland paths, farm tracks and gravel trails, and the terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle rises.

Woods full of depth and calm

The forests around Ubby and Jerslev are the quiet kind. There are no packed car parks or busy joggers here – just trees, birdsong and the particular stillness that settles when you step under a canopy of leaves. Beech and mixed deciduous woodland dominate, and in spring the forest floor is carpeted with white anemones and golden buttercups. Bronze Age burial mounds rise discreetly at the forest edge and along the field margins, and several are easily accessible from the paths. This gives the walk an extra dimension – a sense of following in the footsteps of people who knew this landscape thousands of years ago. The Værslev Trail, which connects several of the area's historic points, crosses the longer routes and offers the chance to extend the walk.

Family-friendly and peaceful

The routes at Ubby-Jerslev suit families with children who want a calm nature experience away from tarmac and traffic. The shorter routes can be completed in under an hour, while the longer ones provide material for a whole afternoon's outing. There are no steep climbs, and the paths are generally well-maintained and easy to follow. The starting point in Ubby is easy to find by car, and parking is available nearby.
